Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Civic activism has evolved significantly with the advent of digital media. In the past, activism was largely confined to physical spaces such as rallies, meetings, and pamphlets. However, with the rise of social media platforms, blogs, and digital communication tools, civic engagement has found a new avenue for expression and mobilization. In Bida Local Government Area, Niger State, digital media has become a key tool for promoting social justice, advocating for policy changes, and engaging the community in important local issues. Digital media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp, allow individuals and groups to communicate directly with a wide audience, thus playing a pivotal role in driving civic activism. This study aims to explore how digital media functions as a tool for civic activism in Bida, examining its influence on political participation, community awareness, and social change.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While digital media has the potential to strengthen civic activism, its effectiveness in driving activism in rural areas such as Bida has not been adequately explored. Issues such as limited internet access, low digital literacy, and inadequate knowledge of digital tools may hinder the full potential of digital media as a tool for civic engagement in Bida. This study seeks to understand how digital media is being utilized for civic activism in the area, highlighting the challenges and opportunities associated with its use.
